What is the ‘Real’ State of the Union…?

/

30 January 2018, and the state of the union is…

Year one of the Trump presidency and the ‘State of the Union’ is…  Well, to hear Trump put it – “…great again…!”

Trump’s ego was massaged grandly by 117 incessantly loud adulation moments (mostly from the republican side); and most of those moments came, in a tradition started by Ronald Reagan highlighting ordinary Americans, when he praised a police officer and his wife for adopting the child of a heroine addict, a North Korean escapee, an Army staff sergeant who saved his buddy, and Representative Steve Scalise who survived being shot during a congressional baseball practice game…

Trump is not a unifier and his attempt at such a thing was weak at best when he declared “I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for … the people we were elected to serve.”  He is being disingenuous asking such a thing considering President Barack Obama asked for the same thing during his time in office and look where we are today: a divided nation both politically and civilly…  Trump is not a person or ‘leader’ who brings people together; if anything he is a blowhard and is so full of himself he wouldn’t know common ground if he was standing on it…!

Americans, for the most part, are decent well-meaning folks, but the 2016 election cycle and Trump has brought out the worse in us as a nation; something we all should be ashamed of and work much harder to change that in spite of Trump…  We are not a nation of ‘tribes’, rather we are a nation that believes in our nation’s motto: ‘e pluribus unum‘ – ‘out of many, one’  That is the ‘common ground’ we all should be working from…!

Quoting the Washington Post: “…there will always be a Teleprompter Trump and a Twitter Trump. He will oscillate unpredictably and erratically between the two personas.”  Trump is not a humble person…  The ‘true’ Trump shows himself during his twitter rants…

So…  ‘What is the real state of the union’…?  It would be my estimation that the ‘state of the union’ is one of turmoil for most and only grand for the few in the ‘1% club’ in the current ‘Trumpian Era’…

Let’s hope that the upcoming mid-term elections will be a time of America changing her political course for the betterment of all of us, not just the few, and we, as a people, take more responsibility in our government and truly make those we elect to represent us more accountable for what they do in our name…!
